Travelling through Australia you become scared of kangaroos jumping out at you un-expectanly. I travelled along at 90km/h hoping to avoid them. Luckily for me I made it to Darwin without a Kangaroo incident.
Just don't travel at dusk or dawn. Dawn probably being more a problem for you than for me ;) I remember arriving in a National Park at night (had to collect fire wood: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64308305@N00/3812741571/in/set-72157620077227388/
Couple of roos jumped out on me as I was going 40km/h... that was the last night ride I did in Oz!

Lucky on the Hwy! They are just looking for someone to play on the thier big backyard you know.
